Write stories that
don’t fall apart.

A story engine that tracks your characters, timelines, and world - and an AI assistant that actually understands your story.

Continuum Writer — workspace view showing book structure, timeline, AI assistant, and story context

You’re 60,000 words in.
And something doesn’t add up.

Were her eyes blue or green?
Did the sword break in chapter 8 or chapter 12?
You scroll back through 200 pages looking for a line you half-remember. Your usual AI chatbot can’t help — it’s never read past the first few thousand words. Your character spreadsheet is three versions out of date. And you just realised two chapters contradict each other!

We built Continuum Writer so you’d never have to hold your entire story in your head.

Everything you need — Even without AI.

A full story engine with visual structure, branching timelines, character tracking, and a focused editor. Fully usable without AI.

Manuscript Editor

Write without distractions. Edit with confidence.

A clean, focused editor built for long-form writing. Focus mode strips everything away so you can just write. Search and replace across scenes. Scene breaks, formatting, and word counts — all the essentials.

AI that understands your story

An assistant that’s read
your entire book.

Not a chatbot. Not a ghostwriter. A collaborator that knows your characters, your timelines, and your world — because it’s read every word.

You stay in control

Every suggestion appears as a diff you review before accepting. Nothing changes without your say-so.

Bring your own API key

Use OpenAI, Anthropic, or free local models via Ollama. No subscription to us. No data harvesting. Ever.

Private & local-first

Your manuscripts never leave your machine. AI queries go to your chosen provider, never through us.

AI Tools

More than just a chatbot.

The AI can search your manuscript semantically, read and summarise any scene, look up characters and relationships, create new entities and suggest prose edits. With access to specialised tools that work with your project — it's not just a generic prompt box.

@Mentions

Give it exactly the context it needs.

Type @CharacterName in the chat to pull in their full profile — backstory, personality, relationships, and more. Works for characters, locations, items, timeline events, and world entries. The AI sees exactly what you’re referring to.

AI Import

Bring your manuscript. The AI does the rest.

Import an existing manuscript and let the AI extract your cast, locations, items, plot events, and relationships automatically. It processes your book in chunks with dedicated passes for each entity type — so nothing gets missed, even in long manuscripts.

Common questions

No. Continuum Writer is a story engine with an AI assistant that understands your story. It reads your manuscript, tracks your characters and timelines, and helps when you ask - but every word is yours. You review and accept or reject any suggestion it makes.

For AI features, yes, you bring your own OpenAI or Anthropic API key, or use free local models via Ollama. Everything else works without it: the editor, workspace, timeline, and character tracking are all fully usable without any setup.

It depends on the provider and how much you use the AI. Most writers spend just a few dollars per month. OpenAI and Anthropic charge per token, and local models via Ollama are completely free. We have a guide in the docs to help you choose.

Yes. All non-AI features work fully offline - the editor, workspace, timeline, characters, export, everything. If you use a cloud AI provider you'll need internet, but local models via Ollama work offline too.

Everything stays on your machine. Continuum Writer is a local-first desktop app - your manuscripts, characters, and world-building data are stored in files on your computer. AI queries go to your chosen provider (OpenAI, Anthropic, or local), never through us.

macOS and Windows.

Yes. Import .pdf, .txt or .md files and Continuum will detect chapter and scene structure automatically. You can also use AI to extract characters, locations, items, and plot events from your manuscript. See Importing a manuscript for more detail.
